Formed during the passage of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, the Coalition for an Accountable Recovery's mission is to promote accountability policies for both government agencies and the companies that contract with or benefit from Recovery Act spending. Members of the Coalition for an Accountable Recovery have diverse views about how and where the recovery money should be spent, but all agree on the need for transparency and accountability. With such large amounts of money being spent so quickly, taxpayers deserve to know where their money is going. The Coalition for an Accountable Recovery believes that this transparency demands new tools, and thus places a special emphasis on the use of technology in the Recovery Act. Using 21st century technology, the Coalition is working to create a new system to track Recovery Act funding, featuring data feeds, open standards, and mapping applications, all of which would be part of a well-built, functional central website, Recovery.gov. These detailed data and research tools will allow citizens to effectively track and analyze the actions of the government (federal and state), in addition to government contractors, to judge for themselves how recovery funds are being spent. The Coalition for an Accountable Recovery also pursues these goals with the larger objective of effecting fiscal reform across the federal government. By using the Recovery Act as a test case, the Coalition aims to demonstrate how the entire federal system, through a better use of technology, can be more transparent and accountable. |
